Hiking Minnekhada

March 10th, 2010

Sheena and I ran up Minnekhada after work today – up and down in 47 minutes. My GPS didn’t get a lock for a bit and we were running so I didn’t get it going until half way into it so this track is a bit incomplete:

A Note on Android Battery Life While Using GPS

March 2nd, 2010

The other week I went on a 1.5 hour hike with a fully charged battery and GPS tracked the whole thing with MyTracks and I came away with 30-40% of my battery left! Thankfully for the following week, I remembered to change my phone into airplane mode for the same hike and it still had 80% charge when I was done.

So for all you hikers & GPS trackers out there – remember to turn on Airplane Mode to make your phone stop wasting all its battery searching for a signal out where it has none!

Here’s how to do it for all the noobs – hold the power button down for about one second, and you will be prompted with the menu to the right here.  Touch the “Airplane Mode” option.  To turn it off again, simply do the same thing.

New Westminster Torchbearer, Don Benson

February 9th, 2010

New Westminster’s Olympic Torchbearer, Don Benson, lit up the cauldron this morning down at Queens Park. We were there to capture the moment, and also interviewed him last week to create a short piece on him to distribute to international media! Check it out on YouTube, and watch for it on TV!

Diez Morning Hike #2

February 2nd, 2010

Two weeks later I’m back at it! Another 5:45am start time for a 7km hike in the rain with a headlamp.

Ray was going to come with this morning, but didn’t feel enough in shape. It was raining, and almost turned me off it, but once I got going I pretty much forgot about the rain entirely. It was just myself and Willi, who is the primary organizer and the guy who lives right next to the trail. It was a really nice morning hike!

In other news….. on the way home I picked up a new battery for my car, as my existing one has slowly been getting weaker and weaker, definately due to the extra strain of my car stereo. Oh, and a nice warm coffee from waves. Though I just found out that they canceled a promotion where I usually get an extra $2 when I put $20 on my waves card! Booo!
