Mark’s Black Tusk Photos

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Mark brought his Nikon D80 SLR with us and took some pretty epic shots! The best that I’ve seen so far is this crazy panoramic shot he took up from the very top of the Black Tusk!

There’s also a whole bunch more in a photo album on his website.

Black Tusk GPS Log, Photos, and more!

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

We just got back down from the Black Tusk hike this afternoon, and it was amazing! The five of us had a blast – Nate, Sheena, Mark, Chloe, and myself! Yesterday we hiked about 18km from the parking lot, up to the top of the Black Tusk (the very top, even up the chimney), then back down to our campsite at Taylor Meadows. Today, we hiked 10.24km from the campsite down to the parking lot. A trip total of 28km!

I took a grand total of 562 photos (all on one battery – with juice to spare!) which you can find all of in my web albums!

I also brought my phone with me on airplane mode, logging our tracks via GPS.  You can check out the maps easily on google maps for day one and day two separately.

My phone battery died about 10 minutes into our descent down from the Tusk.  But it logged the important part of getting up there! A really cool thing that I just tried out was that you can download these KML files (day oneday two) and open the GPS log in Google Earth! It pops all the mountain terrain into 3D and has our little path along it! Also, here’s the screenshots from the GPS logging program on my phone called MyTracks with some more cool info:

It’s Possible

A couple years ago, I suggested a plan to traverse Garibaldi Park, but we canceled and went to Manning Park instead because there was too much snow in the park still.  Anyways, this is mostly for those who I do the summer trips with, but I just wanted to showcase to a YouTube video that has actually done a very similar expedition!

They actually just won second place in a MEC film competition.  I wish I had known earlier and could have made plans to hike to make a film around it.

Hiking Black Tusk

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Today, I climbed a mountain.

It was over 1500 vertical meters to the peak at 2100 meters, and we left my house at 7:30am, and returned home just after 9pm.  It was a spectacular day and an amazing hike that I’ve been craving for a long time.  I’ve always wanted to hike in Garibaldi Park…  The awesome crew was myself, Christine, Jason, Mark, and Chloe

I must say though, that when I first caught a glimpse of the Black Tusk in real life, I was drawn to it and felt that it was begging me to hike up it.  I couldn’t say no to a force of nature that strong!

Here’s my little highlight video:

Over the day, I recorded a bunch of that video and I’ve tried to make it shorter and slightly more entertaining as to not bore you.  Also, if you’re interested in seeing copious amounts of photos, I’ve uploaded hundreds of them to my web albums from all three digital cameras that were on the trip with us!

All in all, it was a beautiful hike, and it’s insired me to really start getting into doing more of these!  Hear me people – let’s get out there and enjoy the amazing vista that is Canada!
