Hiking Dog Mountain (Seymour)

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Since today was BC Day, I found I had an extra day to get a few things done.  Among the list was a trip downtown, so I figured what the heck – let’s do a short little hike out that direction.  It was a little bit of a double back from downtown, but I had a nice lunch down at Deep Cove anyways.  Sheena happened to be coming back from Squamish perfectly with all her gear and such from climbing and camping this weekend so I got her the phone and she was keen to come on out and get some more exercise!

I had heard from my uncle that this short and easy hike had a really nice view of Vancouver – and it didn’t disappoint.  However, today was a little overcast so it was a little hard to see.  You can check out my photos here:

For a total of a 5km hike, with just a few ups and downs (no real elevation gain at all), this was a great little hike. The terrain kept going up and down evenly, and there were a ton of roots all over the ground.  We saw a lot of small children, dogs, and families.  Not my usual cup of tea, but it would be one I’d start getting someone into hiking with!

I christened my awesome new real Swiss Army Knife (a gift from Harley – thank you!) up there by using it to open a Heineken that I carried up there!

Diez Hike with Nate

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

I brought Nate out this morning, and we had a really nice 10km hike. There were four of us total. Nate and another guy engaged in a long and deep debate to exercise their minds while exercising their legs!

Hiking Minnekhada

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Sheena and I ran up Minnekhada after work today – up and down in 47 minutes. My GPS didn’t get a lock for a bit and we were running so I didn’t get it going until half way into it so this track is a bit incomplete:

A Note on Android Battery Life While Using GPS

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The other week I went on a 1.5 hour hike with a fully charged battery and GPS tracked the whole thing with MyTracks and I came away with 30-40% of my battery left! Thankfully for the following week, I remembered to change my phone into airplane mode for the same hike and it still had 80% charge when I was done.

So for all you hikers & GPS trackers out there – remember to turn on Airplane Mode to make your phone stop wasting all its battery searching for a signal out where it has none!

Here’s how to do it for all the noobs – hold the power button down for about one second, and you will be prompted with the menu to the right here.  Touch the “Airplane Mode” option.  To turn it off again, simply do the same thing.
