It was a couple mornings ago that I woke up to my dad complaining about the network not working… and after I got up and took a look, it turns out that out 8 port gigabit switch was malfunctioning! We’ve had it since about November of 2005, and never had an issue with it. Anyways, I played around with it for a while and discovered that it can only now support up to four active connections. If a fifth cable is plugged in and active, it will immediately start not working and blinking all of its lights. I swapped around some cables and got the network running with several less machines on the gigabit speed, but at least I have enough ports for everything to be online still. We picked up a new 8 port gigabit switch yesterday and installed it – giving us a total of four more ports than we had before the problem occured! Sweet, an upgrade! I’ve now got two gigabit lines running into Bob, my server, and I’ll be monitoring how the network performance is over the next little while.
Work today was pretty enjoyable because I got down and re-built both Phi, my main workstation (the quad core), and Yonder (Spencer’s main workstation, and the projects drive host). Things should run smoother and faster now that they are less crapped up! Next on my list is Bob… Urp.
Aside from all my backups and such, I’m starting work on editing up the promo for PoCo’s Canada Day Celebrations, and I’m looking to do a bang up job because I want to use it as a portfolio piece for some upcoming projects. Spencer did me up a fun track in Acid, and we’ll be getting Brittany do some some singing (without lyrics), and Hayate to jam in some guitar to spice up the sound! It should be a fun little project and I plan to spend a while editing it to make it look really spiffy.
Another project on the go is a music video for Chloe (who also has a new website!). She’s a trained singer and is planning to release a bunch of her stuff in Europe, but needs a video to “complete her package”, so we’re crafting one up over the next couple weeks. We’re doing a re-make on the song “The Masquerade” by George Benson. We should be shooting at the first location this weekend.
Related to the above project, I must mention what I’ve been up to in my spare time this past week! It’s very exciting for me! I’ve been designing the back-end for the film section of paulromein dot ca! It’s been very long hours of work, but I’ve finally got my database completely functional and I’ve written some nifty php to display the data for the films and such in a very simple and functional way! Now what’s taken me the most time has been something that I’ll pretty much be the only one using, but it’s a content management system (CMS) for all of the data in that section. Everything from the crew profiles, to the film information, to the news on the sidebar! The best part about the whole thing (and it’s Mark Bakker approved as Awesome), is that the entire CMS is AJAX driven. Which means the whole thing for adding and changing content is done on a webpage without re-loading the page! A very high-end example of an AJAX project is Gmail. It was revolutionary because of that aspect. It took the world by storm. And I built my own baby version of it for myself to manage my content!
The whole section is coming along very well and I’m running through some beta testing while prettying it up and such before I let it loose and turn it live. Stay tuned for certain! Cough – if you’re interested in a preview, here’s the link to the page for Chloe‘s music video I mentioned above:
Funny – it’s about midnight and I just realized that my air-conditioner is still running! Bah – it’s not even all that hot out!
